On November 1, 2022 we had a special ribbon-cutting celebration to mark the opening of Brooklyn’s Premier Innovation Lab at Summit Academy Charter School in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Summit Academy Charter School’s Esports Innovation Lab is a result of the joint vision, partnership, and efforts of Summit’s Leadership Team and the Center for Educational Innovation’s (CEI) Esports Division. After developing a successful pilot during the Spring of 2022, Summit now has a fully equipped and operational Gaming laboratory designed to support students interested in the world of Gaming Opportunities and Competitive Esports teams. Students can earn elective credits toward graduation and opportunities to participate in after-school sessions for fun and engagement. We expect to graduate students who will pursue degree programs in Gaming, as well as students who will pursue competitive Esports opportunities.
STEM at Summit Academy Charter School is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering, and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Through STEM education, scholars learn to become problem solvers, innovators, creators, and collaborators and go on to fill the critical pipeline of engineers, scientists, and innovators so essential to the future of New York and the nation.
In 2019, Summit Academy Charter School was awarded a grant through the offices of then-Councilman Carlos Menchaca and then Borough President, now Mayor Eric Adams. The funding was used to develop a full STEM Studio to allow scholars to learn Coding and Robotics. Recently, Summit Academy partnered with Amazon Future Engineers Program to bring Introduction to Computer Science to high school students and an introductory course based on the MCS Scratch curriculum that empowers middle school students to engage with computer science as a medium for creativity, communication, problem-solving, and fun. The Amazon Future Engineer is a comprehensive childhood-to-career program aimed at increasing access to computer science education for children and young adults from underserved and underrepresented communities.
At Summit Academy Charter School, we have designed the entire curriculum around the goal of getting scholars into college. We keep academic standards high but class sizes small so our extraordinarily dedicated faculty can give each scholar the individual attention they need. We deliver the benefits of rigorous scholarship to Brooklyn’s Community School District #15 with a public education that addresses their academic needs and delivers on the aspirations they and their families hold for them.
At Summit Academy, our mission is simple: to prepare scholars to gain acceptance to, excel in, and graduate from college. The addition of the Innovation Lab and STEM Studio has opened up new opportunities for our scholars to explore in college and the world beyond.
